Gabbi Walters, a vet student at Mississippi State University, is one of the first recipients of the Dr. Elton Mac Huddleston rural veterinarian scholarship, which covers her in-state tuition to increase large animal veterinarians in rural Mississippi. Gabbi, who has been working in veterinary clinics since age 15, emphasizes the importance of clinical experience and the role of organizations like 4-H and FFA in her development. She double-majored in Animal and Dairy Science and Pre-Veterinary Medicine, conducted undergraduate research, and studied abroad in Costa Rica. Gabbi aims to be a confident large animal veterinarian within two years post-graduation, either buying into her home practice or becoming a traveling vet.
