Dr. Phil Bushby, a 1972 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, has been a faculty member at Mississippi State University since 1978. He is renowned for his spay-neuter programs, which have prevented millions of animals from being euthanized. His program, which began in the early 90s, has grown to include a brick-and-mortar spay-neuter facility and a mobile unit. Students gain extensive surgical experience, with many graduating having performed over 100 surgeries. Dr. Bushby emphasizes the importance of spay-neuter and adoption from shelters to combat pet overpopulation. He has overseen 127,000 spay-neuter surgeries since 2007, with students performing the majority.
