Dr. James Brett, DVM
Overview
Summary:
Dr. Jim Brett is a native of Kosciusko, Mississippi and graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University in 1983. For over 24 years, he was in private practice in Montezuma, GA, the last 22 as the owner of a rural, mixed-animal practice. Dr. Brett’s primary focus while in private practice was large animal ambulatory service and food animal production medicine. While in Georgia, he served on the Board of Directors and President of the South Georgia and the Georgia Veterinary Medical Associations. He was appointed to the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine for 5 years and was the alternate delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s House of Delegates for 5 years. He has served on the AVMA’s Milk Quality and Convention Management & Planning Committees and multiple state and national professional and producer committees and task forces. He has served on advisory groups to pharmaceutical companies such as Elanco Animal Health, Monsanto and Merck and contributed a regular column in Dairy Herd Management magazine for over 10 years. He was the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Alumni Fellows recipient in 1991 and was recognized by the Georgia VMA and the Georgia Cattleman’s Association as the Georgia Large Animal Practitioner of the Year in 2000.
He returned to Mississippi State University in August 2007 and is a clinical professor for the large animal mobile farm call service. Dr. Brett also lectures students in various subjects including Bovine Medicine and Surgery, Professional Development, Population Medicine, Toxicology, and their Principles of Business Management elective. He has collaborated in research on mastitis, metabolic disease in dairy cows and other projects with faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine and the MSU Animal/Dairy Science department with multiple publications. He coauthored a chapter on “Evaluating the reproductive performance on dairy farms” in Bovine Reproduction, by Dr. Richard Hopper. He was inducted into MSU-CVM chapter of Phi Zeta honor society in 2010.
Dr. Brett served as the alternate delegate or delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates from the Mississippi for 12 years and was a member of the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association’s Executive Board at that time. He also served a 3-year term on the AVMA House Advisory Committee while a delegate. He received the MSU-CVM Dean’s Pegasus Award for Service in 2011, the Mississippi Veterinarian of the Year in 2017 and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners Distinguished Service Award in 2020. He was the recipient of the AVMA President’s Award for his contributions to the veterinary profession at the AVMA annual meeting July 29, 2022.
He is married to Heather Hobbs Brett and spends most of his free time caring for her goat herd on their farm and playing golf when he has a chance.
